POSITION:

NYSSB Advisor for 2024-2025 after-school program: The Angelo del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth (PR/HYLI) Leadership Program

This is a part-time per session job for a licensed teacher that will work virtually and in person with a small group of eligible PRHYLI students that are interested in attaining the Seal of Biliteracy through a capstone project.

 

One (1) position available

 

LOCATION:

Multiple locations in Manhattan, including online platforms (ZOOM and Google Classroom)

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

●       New York City Public School licensed and appointed secondary teacher: Spanish (World Languages/LOTE) or Secondary content area with Bilingual Education.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Experience with the New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) preferred
  • Experience or knowledge of PR/HYLI preferred
  • Three (3) years of satisfactory professional experience  
  • Demonstrated ability in conducting extracurricular student activities in-person and online.  
  • Fluent and Proficiency and literacy in Spanish required. 
  • Excellent communication skills and administrative skills, including ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in using digital tools (e.g. Google Docs, Google classroom, Zoom, Google Meet)
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Google Classroom, Padlet and Excel preferred.
  • Spanish (World Languages/LOTE) or Bilingual Extension (7-12) preferred.
  • Strong self-starter

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

November - June

Personnel will perform the following tasks under the direction of the project supervisor:  

  • Identify PR/HYLI students interested in pursuing the New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB).
  • Attend PR/HYLI meetings, professional development sessions, events, and activities as scheduled.
  • Collaborate with OML central staff to organize a NYSSB info session for interested PR/HYLI delegates.
  • Review and become familiar with all OML and PRHYLI resources.
  • Foster a safe, student-centered hybrid environment that encourages student leadership, confidence, and community.
  • Develop a strong understanding of PR/HYLI bills in both English and Spanish to ensure student materials for the CBP align with the bills studied in PR/HYLI sessions.
  • Meet with central staff and school NYSSB coordinators to ensure alignment and progress tracking.
  • Conduct both in-person and virtual meetings with students to review and support the completion of NYSSB Capstone Biliteracy Project based on PR/HYLI experience.
  • Maintain detailed records of student work and attendance for effective monitoring.
  • Prepare students for their Community Action Day presentations on March 1, 2024, ensuring they are ready to present effectively.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:

HOURS UP TO, BUT NOT LIMITED TO APPROXIMATELY 125 HOURS

October 26, 2024 – June 1, 2025

  • Staff Training Sessions led by the Office of Multilingual Learners:
    • October 26 (in-person), October 27 (virtual), and December 7 (in-person), from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • PRHYLI Statewide Train-the-Trainer Session:
    • November 16, 2024 (in-person), from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Manhattan
  • Saturday Student Sessions:
    • November 23, 2024, December 14, 2024, March 1, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Note: hours may vary on November 23 and March 1).
  • Weekday Hours (Monday to Friday):
    • Between 3:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. (additional hours may be required for program and student support).
    • Represent PRHYLI at the NYSSB end-of-year celebration in Spring 2025
    • Attend biweekly meetings with central staff, or as required, from November 2024 to April 2025 Attend the NYSSB end-of-year celebration in Spring 2025, representing PRHYLI. 
    • Conduct biweekly one-hour student group sessions to review and discuss go over the capstone project.
    • Offer virtual office hours for NYSSB student candidates for student support as needed

 

Hours up to, but not limited to the approximate number of hours listed. Additional hours may be granted upon the approval of the hiring manager.

 

SALARY:

Per Session rates as per the relevant union/organization of the advertised title (Collective Bargaining Agreement). Contingent upon funding availability and programmatic approval.
