NYC Mentoring Program

The New York City Mentoring Program (NYCMP) works with businesses, organizations, associations, and government agencies to develop successful mentoring partnerships with public high schools throughout New York City. Our partners recruit mentors from within their organization to volunteer for a full school year at a selected public high school. Only groups of at least 15 or more volunteers, all from the same organization, are accepted into the program. Mentors receive training, administrative support, mentoring resources, and guidance throughout the year. Our framework is designed to broaden the horizons of high school students and to help them navigate diverse educational, social, and professional situations.

Our Impact

Since 1983, the New York City Mentoring Program has connected tens of thousands of high school students with mentors. We believe access to professional adult role models can make an indelible impact on the personal and professional development of high school students. Mentors serve as role models and friends that students can look to for guidance. Mentors offer career exploration, facilitate conversations about goal setting, provide advice on school work and the college admissions process, and lead activities that tap into the city’s vast cultural resources. These inspiring mentors will help students realize their potential in school, at work, and in life.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Mentor Partners: Organizations must have 15 or more interested volunteers willing to commit to four hours per month for one school year. Volunteers are required to submit an application, complete training, and get a background check. An in-house coordinator must also be designated by the organization. In addition, a yearly tax-deductible donation helps support the success of the mentoring program and our school coordinators. Interested partners can contact us through our website: www.nycmentoringprogram.org/contact.

School Partners: High schools can contact us to inquire about available mentoring partners. Mentoring partners are limited, however, and it is suggested that schools work to encourage new partner organizations interested in providing support to join the mentoring program. Schools must be able to designate a dedicated school coordinator to recruit and work with students and their mentor partners. Coordinators are trained in program implementation. Interested high schools can contact us through our website: www.nycmentoringprogram.org/contact.
