Court-Involved Youth

Students who are arrested and detained or incarcerated can attend school. We offer the following programs for detained or incarcerated students.

Passages Academy

Passages Academy provides educational instruction and counseling for students in secure and non-secure detention and placement facilities operated by the Division of Youth and Family Justice of the Administration for Children's Services.

East River Academy

East River Academy serves students ages 18-21 who are incarcerated on Rikers Island. In addition, we provide HSE classes to adult persons in custody in several facilities on Rikers Island. For more information, visit East River Academy's website.

ReStart Academy

Is for 13–21 year-old students who are temporarily in involuntary settings, such as:

  • substance-abuse day and residential treatment,
  • mental or behavioral health treatment,
  • social services agencies, and
  • other transitional settings.

It provides a path to:

  • middle school promotion
  • high school diploma or
  • high school equivalency

Court Liaisons

The DOE has liaisons in six courthouses across New York City. They help students, families, and agency partners get educational records and referrals to school and social services.
