POSITION:

The Office of Multilingual Learners seeks multiple trainers who foster a welcoming, fun environment where students learn about advocacy and the legislative process. Teachers should embrace and celebrate students’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds, creating a space where all students appreciate and support each other's linguistic and cultural journeys.

 

POSITION:

Program Student Trainer for 2024-2025 Angelo del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth (PR/HYLI) Leadership after-school Program.

 

Several positions available.

 

LOCATION:

Multiple locations in-person in Manhattan

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

●       New York City Public Schools licensed social worker

 

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • At least three (3) years of satisfactory (Highly Effective/Effective) professional experience within the NYCDOE.
  • Permission granted by school supervisor.  
  • Demonstrated expertise as a trainer/chaperone in a youth leadership program.
  • Demonstrated ability in conducting and/or supplementing in person and online lessons and resources.  
  • Fluency and literacy in Spanish is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Conscientious and efficient in fulfilling commitments, adhering to deadlines, and achieving desired outcomes.
  • Strong people skills, with the capacity to empathize and build trusting relationships with students and parents.

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Personnel will carry out one or more of the following responsibilities under the direction of the project leader:

  • Work with PRHYLI coordinator and PRHYLI staff to co-lead interactive educational morning sessions, incorporating arts and games, to build community and foster students' understanding in areas such as the legislative process, leadership, advocacy, teamwork, culture, communication. 
  • Coach students in Public Speaking, Debate, and Persuasive Communication
  • Incorporate engaging activities and discussions into afternoon lessons in English and Spanish that promote leadership skills, culture, teamwork, student voice, and ethical decision-making among students.
  • Chaperone and accompany students on a trip to Albany for the Leadership Weekend
  • Collaborate closely with central staff, PRHYLI administrators and coordinators to organize Community Action Day, which involves holding virtual planning meetings with both staff and students.
  • Oversee the completion of student legislative bill worksheets by the February deadline.
  • Monitor student progress, offering feedback and advice to improve the quality of their arguments and overall readiness
  • Ensure that all materials and resources are available and accessible to students ahead of the deadline.
  • Guide and mentor students in developing strong, well-researched arguments for the legislative bills.
  • Provide ongoing support and resources to ensure students are fully prepared for their presentations.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Office of Multilingual Learners, PR/HYLI coordinator, administrator and central staff. 

 

WORK SCHEDULE:

Up to 135 HOURS.  Can not exceed 135 hours in total.  

October 26, 2024 – March 18, 2025

  • Staff Training Sessions led by the Office of Multilingual Learners:
    October 26 (in-person), October 27 (virtual), and December 7 (in-person), from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • PRHYLI Statewide Train-the-Trainer Session:
    November 16, 2024 (in-person), from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Manhattan
  • Saturday Student Sessions:
    November 23, 2024, December 14, 2024, January 4, January 11, February 1, February 8, and March 1, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Note: hours may vary on November 23 and March 1).
  • Weekday Hours (Monday to Friday):
    3:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. (additional hours may be required for program and student support).

Albany Trip:

  • Weekend in Albany, NY:
    Saturday, March 8, Sunday, March 9, and Monday, March 10, 2025 (principal permission is required for Monday). Newly hired teachers must inform their school supervisor upon receiving their hiring letter.

 

Hours up to, but not limited to the approximate number of hours listed. Additional hours will not be granted.

 

 

SALARY:

Per Session rates as per the relevant union/organization of the advertised title (Collective Bargaining Agreement). Contingent upon funding availability and programmatic approval.
