General Duties and Responsibilities 

Under the general supervision of the school principal or his/her designee, the School Health Aide facilitates the provision of school health services to students, their families and staff in the medical room of a New York City Board of Education.   May administer first aid; maintain health, immunization and TB records: 

  • Assists in the review of student’s health records for immunization status and transcribes information on the immunization on the immunization history forms 

  • Prepares "Warning and Exclusion" letters to parents/guardians when student's immunizations are incomplete 

  • Assists in the review of student's health records for physical examinations, Lead and Tuberculin screening 

  • Prepares "Warning and Exclusion" letters to parents/guardians when Tuberculin screening is not complete 

  • Assists students and their families in locating primary health care resources in their community 

  • Assists students and families in following through with specific health referrals e.g., vision, hearing or physical examinations, etc. 

  • Links students and their families with available primary care services, e.g. Child Health Plus, Managed Care, etc. 

  • Assists eligible families in registering for Medicaid services 

  • Assists in scheduling health fairs 

  • Assists in scheduling and speaking on health issues at parent and staff workshops 

  • Assists in referral of students who need medical attention and follow-up, and submits a list to attending medical staffer other authorized personnel for review 

  • Maintains inventory records of supplies in the medical room 

  • Records and files students' medical information 

  • Assists a school nurse or other health service providers in staffing the medical room in a New York City Public School 

  • Administers first aid in the medical room when necessary, and keeps a log of first aid and emergency services rendered for review by the principal and attending medical staff 

  • Screen students for vision, hearing, height and weight 

 

Minimum Selection Criteria 

  • Excellent record of attendance and punctuality 

  • Demonstrated ability to work with supervisors and other school-based staff 

  • Demonstrated history of good human relations 

  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently carry out assignments 

  • Knowledge of CSE procedures 

 

 

 

Anticipated Work Schedule 

Monday-Friday.  Hours vary by school.  Minimum of 4 Hours per day, five days per week   

 

Salary 

As Per Collective Bargaining Agreement
